Twelve Things To Check Before Leaving On A Photo Trip

Tomorrow I am leaving for a long awaited vacation to Greece. It’s a family trip, but that doesn’t mean I am not intending to take as many photos as I can reasonably do, so most of my carry-on luggage will be filled with photographic equipment. As before any photo trip, I make a checklist of everything I need to carry. My checklist, of course, includes a number of items that I own, but there are some things that everybody should not forget to check before leaving, therefore I’ve compiled a generic list that should cover all of the essentials.

If there is anything that I’ve missed, feel free to leave a comment below. Thank you.

  1. Check that all your batteries are charged.
  2. Format all your memory cards.
  3. Thoroughly clean your cameras, lenses, and filters.
  4. Don’t forget to carry a lens cleaning cloth, rocket blower, duster, and everything that you might need, but be careful of airline restrictions on liquids.
  5. Check that you have your battery chargers, cables, and adapters.
  6. Check that you have charged batteries for all your extra devices, like remote control, intervalometer, flashlight.
  7. Verify that you have enough locks for all your bags.
  8. Give a good cleaning to your tripod; make sure there is no sand in the joints. See this article by Varina Patel on how to do it.
  9. Set the correct time on all your cameras, according to the time zone of your destination.
  10. If traveling with a laptop or tablet, verify that you are bringing everything needed to transfer images to them: card reader, USB cable, iPad camera connection kit.
  11. Bring a backup device, if you plan to download images to your laptop.
  12. Check that you have enough business cards. I recommend using to print a pack of business cards, each with a different image on the back: they make for great conversation starters.

Have a nice trip and good light!

  1. Be careful about the rocket air blower. I’ve read about stupid security check who thinks it looks too much like a real rocket or a bomb or something. Actually, I don’t take it with me most of the time just because it’s too bulky.
